GLOSSARY

anterior: head region of animal

anteroposteriorly: from head region to tail region

barbel: small, whisker-like projection near the mouth of a fish (functions in tactile and taste sensation)

caudal peduncle: the region directly anterior to the caudal (tail) fin of a fish

dorsal: upper side of animal (back)

lateral line: sensory structure extending from the head region, posteriorly--along the side of the fish; comprised of visible pores that open into a channel beneath the skin's surface

oblique: describes a fish's mouth that angles sharply down from the snout

pelage: the fur of an animal

pinna: external part of ear (pl. pinnae)

posterior: tail region of animal

uropatagium: membrane, or skin, stretching between the legs and tail on both sides of the bat's tail (also called the interfemoral).

ventral: underside of animal (belly)
