The College of Agriculture has hired Hermann Schatzl as the Wyoming Excellence Chair in veterinary neurosciences with a focus on teaching, research, and service in prion biology. Prion diseases, such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle, scrapie in sheep, and chronic wasting disease (CWD) in elk, affect both livestock and wildlife, and as such are of particular importance to Wyoming’s livestock and tourism sectors, its economy, landscape, and lifestyle. In some cases, prion diseases have been known to affect humans as well.

With the establishment of the Wyoming Excellence Chair in prion biology, University of Wyoming has the potential to build national and international recognition as a center of excellence for animal disease and prion research.
