Sports Medicine StaffThe University of Wyoming Sports Medicine Staff is responsible for and directing all matters concerning the health care and welfare of the intercollegiate student athlete. The Sports Medicine Staff consists of Certified Athletic Trainers, Team Physicians, Athletic Training Students, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists, and the various consultants in the areas of general medical, chiropractic care, massage therapy, cardiology, neurology, ophthalmology, and counseling.
Joi Thomas enters her fourthyear as an Assistant Athletic Trainer at the University of Wyoming. Joi moved into the position after spending two years as a Graduate Assistant at UW with Football and Track. Prior to her Graduate Assistantship, Joi spent five years as the Head Athletic Trainer at Carroll College in Helena, MT. As part of her responsibilities at Carroll College, Joi provided coverage for all intercollegiate sports along with teaching responsibilities in the Health and Physical Education Program. Joi is a previous graduate of the University of Wyoming where she completed her B.S. degree in Exercise and Sport Science in 1999. She also received her NATA-BOC certification in 2000. As an Assistant Athletic Trainer, Joi has athletic training responsibilities with men's basketball, sport oversight with Track and Field, wrestling and teaching responsibilities in the Athletic Training Education Program.
Brian O'Flannigan enters his third year at the University of Wyoming as an Assistant Athletic Trainer responsible for Women's Soccer. Prior to Wyoming, Brian was an Athletic Trainer for Yellowstone Sports Medicine where he did outreach as the Head Athletic Trainer for Northwest College, Powell High School, and Cody High School. He also was a clinical instructor at Northwest College, where he implemented and adapted University of Wyoming ATEP protocols. Brian received his Bachelors Degree from the University of Wyoming in Exercise Science and Sports Science with an emphasis in Athletic Training and Cardiac Rehabilitation. He completed his Masters of Science in Education Degree at Northern Illinois University where he also was a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer. Brian is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association, Rocky Mountain Athletic Trainers Association, Wyoming Athletic Trainers Association and is also a professional member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Scott Knerr enters his second season at the University of Wyoming as an assistant athletic trainer with the Cowgirl Volleyball program. Scott comes to Wyoming after spending the past eight years in the same capacity at IPFW. He oversaw the primary coverage of women's and men's volleyball along with supervisory coverage of men's and women's golf. Prior to that, he worked at Registered Physical Therapists, Inc. from 1997-2000 in Salt Lake City, Utah as a clincial athletic trainer. In addition to that, he served as a graduate assistant trainer at the University of Utah for two years (1995-97). His primary responsibilities included coverage of football, women's soccer and the nationally ranked women's gymnastics team. He earned his bachelor's degree in athletic training from Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. in 1995, while receiving his master's degree in sports management in 1997 from the University of Utah. Knerr is a member of and certified by the National Athletic Trainers' Association. He and wife, Jen, have three children, Parker, Claire and Liam.
Alison Mosel enters her second season as an Athletic Trainer at the University of Wyoming. Her primary responbilities are with the Cowgirl Basketball Program and Women's Golf. Alison comes to Wyoming after spending the last five years at Buena Vista University (Storm Lake, Iowa) in the same capacity. She oversaw the primary coverage of volleyball, men's basketball, baseball and softball, while also being an instructor in the School of Education with an emphasis in Exercise Science and Athletic Training Courses along with several other administrative duties. Prior to joining BVU, she completed her Master's Degree in Education at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, MO in the Spring of 2003. During that time, she served as a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer with primary responsibilities of volleyball, softball, women's soccer and the track and field teams. A native of Orchard, Nebraska, Alison graduated from Dakota Wesleyan, she interned at Baker University in Baldwin, KS and at the Neu Physical Therapy Clinic in Lawrence, KS. Alison is certified by the Board of Certification and currently is a member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association.
Missy Schultz enters her second year as an assistant athletic trainer at the University of Wyoming responsible for the Swimming and Diving team and oversight of the wrestling team. Before joining the Wyoming Sports Medicine staff, Missy was the Head Athletic Trainer at Judson University in Elgin, IL. While at Judson University, she provided athletic training service for all seven intercollegiate sports. Prior to that, she was the assistant athletic trainer at Benedictine University in Lisle, IL where she aided the staff in all sports coverage. The summer of 2008, Missy worked for the Chicago Bears Youth Football camps and in the summer of 2007 she worked on the movie set of "The Express: The Ernie Davis Story" providing care for the athletes filmed in the movie. Missy received her bachelor's degree in Physical Education with an emphasis in Athletic Training from Western Illinois University in 2004. Upon graduation, Missy passed the Board of Certification examination to gain her certification as a Certified Athletic Trainer. In 2006, she received her master's degree in Education in the field of Exercise Physiology from Northern Illinois University where she also was a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer for the Women's Soccer and Softball teams. Missy is a member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association, College Athletic Trainers' Society, and is an Approved Clinical Instructor in the UW Athletic Training Education Program.

Bill Lyons received his B.S. degree in Health Physical Education and Recreation from the University of Wyoming and his M.S. degree from the University of Arizona Graduate Athletic Training Curriculum Program. He completed his NATA-BOC certification in 1974. As the director of the Athletic Training Education Program at UW, Bill teaches and administrates the CAATE Athletic Training Curriculum Program. Bill's athletic training career started at Ampitheatre High School in Tucson, AZ. From there, he was an Assistant Athletic Trainer at the University of Arizona and then moved on as the Head Athletic Trainer at Fort Hayes State University in Fort Hayes, KS. He returned to the University of Wyoming in 1978 where he served as an Assistant Athletic Trainer and Head Athletic Trainer until 2001 when he began the Athletic Training Education Program. Professionally, Bill has been very active within the state, regional, and national athletic trainer associations. He has served on the National Athletic Training Board of Directors, President and Secretary of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Trainers Association inc., and President of the Wyoming Athletic Trainers Association. Bill was named 2006 Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer at the NATA convention and is also a member of the RMATA Hall of Fame.
Dr. Carson received his B.S. degree in Microbiology and Chemistry at South Dakota State University in 1988. He completed his M.D. degree and residency from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX in 1995 and 2000 respectively. Dr. Carson focuses on treating patients with sport related injuries and has been a UW team physician for the past 4 years. His interest in orthopedics includes sports, foot and ankle, and total joints. He enjoys running, skiing, fishing, hunting, and spending time with his wife Cynthi and two children Erika and Jake.
Dr. Aukerman joined the physicians of Gem City Bone & Joint in 2006 after completing a Fellowship in Sports Medicine from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Dr. Aukerman is a specialist in Sports Medicine, advanced arthroscopy and a complex knee and shoulder surgery. He is also an Associate Master Instructor for the Arthroscopy Association of North America where he teaches other orthopedic surgeons around the nation the latest surgical techniques. While at the University of Wisconsin, he worked directly with Division 1A athletes in Football, Basketball, National Championship Hockey, Wrestling and several other sports. He received his B.S. degree from Colorado State University in 1996, and then acquired his M.D. from the University of Colorado. Dr. Aukerman completed his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Colorado in 2005 and is currently Board Certified by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery. In his free time, he enjoys waterskiing, wakeboarding, snowboarding, fishing, hunting, mountain biking and international travels.
Dr. Kleppinger, "Klep" to his patients, grew up in Casper, Wyoming and graduated with honors from the University of Wyoming. His Medical School Training was at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. He went to Oklahoma Children's Memorial Hospital in Oklahoma City for his Pediatrics Internship and Residency. Following Residency, he did an extra year of Fellowship training in Ambulatory Pediatrics, where he had extra training in the fields of Pediatric Development, Adolescent Medicine and Pulmonary Pediatrics. Dr. Kleppinger moved to Laramie in 1985 and has practiced Pediatrics continually here since 1985. In January 1999 he opened his current office, Laramie Pediatrics, PC where his current practice resides. Dr. Kleppinger is Board Certified in Pediatrics and is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the world's largest organization for Pediatrics. He is also a member of the American Thoracic Society, the AAP Section on Child Development and Section on Adolescent Medicine.
Marci grew up in Cleveland, Ohio and moved to Laramie in 1977 to attend the University of Wyoming and received a Bachelors Degree in Social Work. Expanding her interest in working with people, she turned to Nursing and earned her Bachelors Degree in Science from the University of Northern Colorado School of Nursing in 1986. The next 13 years provided a wide range of Nursing experiences, both in Hospital settings and Public Health. In Carbon County, she received specialized training as a Lactation Educator and worked with premature infants and high risk infants. Marci was the Best Beginnings Coordinator for Carbon County. Marci moved back to Laramie from Saratoga in 1998 to complete her Masters of Science in Nursing with training as a Family Nurse Practitioner. In September of 1999 she joined us at Laramie Pediatrics, PC as our Nurse Practitioner. Marci is Board Certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner, is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, National Association of Neonatal Nurse Practitioners and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. In our practice setting, Marci provides comprehensive Pediatric Care to all of our patient groups.
