June 14, 2006 -- The University of Wyoming is offering a four-course certificate program in public administration on-site in Rawlins.
The certificate will primarily be oriented around criminal justice and law enforcement. The four courses, which comprise the certificate program, will emphasize the following subject areas: ethics, conflict resolution, public policy as it relates to criminal justice, and criminal behavior.
The program will feature one course this summer, POLS 2410, Introduction to Public Administration. The course will be taught by award-winning professor Larry Hubbell, director of UW's Master of Public Administration Program. This course will expose students to psychological concepts as they apply to organizations.
The course will be held Fridays from 3-10 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m.-5 p.m. June 23-24; July 14-15, and 28-29 at the Carbon County Higher Education Center in Rawlins. Wyoming Department of Corrections (DOC) administrators say they will be as accommodating as possible to provide alternate schedules to minimize the use of annual leave by participating staff members.
The courses will also be open to DOC employees and residents of Carbon County. Each course will cost $309. The DOC will pay half of the tuition expenses for those students who receive a "C" or better in each course. Students can pay for half of the course at the time of registration and pay the other half 30 days into the course.
The other instructors are: Bob Schuhmann, chairman of the UW Department of Political Science; Tracy Skopek, UW assistant professor of political science; and Rick Patterson, social science instructor at Eastern Wyoming College.
DOC employees will benefit in several ways, including having an opportunity to interact with their peers and obtaining credit toward a B.A. degree at UW, Hubbell says. Additionally, it will enhance professional development and improve employees' opportunities for advancement.
