Aug. 2, 2005 -- University of Wyoming Ph.D. student Becky Atkinson from Lingle presented her research on ruminant nutrition at a national agriculture conference in Cincinnati.
Atkinson, a student in the College of Agriculture's Department of Animal Science, was one of two recipients nationwide awarded a travel scholarship to attend the American Society of Animal Science's (ASAS) recent national meeting. Her project is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Research Initiative Competitive Grants Program.
Atkinson's dissertation research, directed by Associate Professor Paul Ludden, focused on investigating endogenous nitrogen recycling to the rumen of forage-fed ruminants in response to protein supplementation strategies.
"The whole idea is to enhance the efficiency of protein use by cattle, sheep and other ruminant livestock," Ludden said.
As a complement to the project, Atkinson is beginning investigations into the role of urea transporters on the efficiency of nitrogen use by ruminants.
She is supported by a 2004-2006 Minority and Women Graduate Assistantship awarded by the UW Graduate School. In 2003, she received her master's degree in animal and veterinary science at UW, directed by Professor Dan Rule in the Department of Animal Science.
Her travel award was presented by the ASAS Foundation via the Dr. Joe Fontenot Appreciation Club. The club, named in honor of the professor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, was established in 2002 to support graduate student travel to and participation in the annual ASAS meetings.
