UW Women's History Month Schedule

March 16, 2006 -- The University of Wyoming Women's Studies Program, with support from various UW groups, will celebrate Women's History Month 2006 with events throughout March and April.

Featured writer Emily Hammond will read from her work at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 23, in the Hoyt Hall Mathison Library. The reading is co-sponsored by the UW Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing Program.

Hammond is the author of a critically-acclaimed collection of short stories, "Breathe Something Nice," and a recently-published novel, "Milk." The Ft. Collins, Colo., native has been awarded a Colorado Fellowship for the Arts, the Katherine Anne Porter Prize, and fellowships to the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference and the Ucross Foundation. She has published fiction in several magazines including "Ploughshares," "New England Review," "Colorado Review" and "Alaska Quarterly Review."

The UW Department of Philosophy and College of Arts and Sciences, with women's studies participation, will sponsor an essay contest for UW students. The 2006 James Orr Willits Ethics Essay Competition addresses the question, "Is abortion wrong?" Papers should be no longer than 10 pages and are due April 10. A $1,500 prize will be awarded for first place and $1,000 for second. Winners will be announced April 24. Women's History Month activities are free and open to the public unless otherwise indicated. The event schedule is:

March 20 -- Movie and discussion, "The Education of Shelby Knox," at 7 p.m. in the Wyoming Union ballroom.

March 23
-- Reading by featured writer Emily Hammond at 7 p.m. in the Hoyt Hall Mathison Library.

March 24-25
-- "Shorts by Skirts," a multi-media cabaret of original works by female artists, presented each night at 7:30 in the Fine Arts Center studio theatre. The Women's Action Network and the Associated Students of the Performing Arts are co-sponsors.

March 27
-- Panel discussion, "Women Professors and Community Activists Talk About Their Real Lives," 7-9 p.m. in the College of Business auditorium.

March 29-31
-- Shepard Symposium on Social Justice, "Investing in Social Justice: Making the Invisible Visible. Events are in the Wyoming Union. Visit www.uwyo.edu/outreach/conferences/justice/index.htm for a complete schedule.

April 1
-- Disabled female performance artist Afi-Tiombe Kambon will perform at 7 p.m. in the Wyoming Union ballroom.

April 6
-- "Take Back the Night" rally and march beginning at 5 p.m. in Prexy's Pasture.

April 21-25
-- UW Department of Theatre and Dance presents "The Women of Lockerbie," on the Fine Arts Center main stage. Evening performances are at 7:30 p.m.; the Sunday matinee is at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $6 for students, $11 for seniors and $13 for others. For more, visit www.uwyo.edu/th&d/whats_playing.
