U.S. Surgeon General to Speak at UW Graduate Student Symposium |

March 30, 2005 -- Vice Admiral Richard H. Carmona, the 17th Surgeon General of the United States Public Health Service, will be among key speakers during the University of Wyoming Graduate Symposium April 4 5 in the Wyoming Union.
His talk is scheduled Tuesday, April 5, at 1 p.m. in the Wyoming Union ballroom. Carmona advises the president and secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services on the full range of critical public health, medical, and health system issues facing the nation. He advocates effective disease prevention and health promotion programs and activities, including health initiatives such as tobacco use cessation and HIV prevention efforts.
Author and television commentator Allan J. Lichtman, professor of history at The American University, also will speak at the symposium. His talk will be at 1 p.m. Monday, April 4, in the Wyoming Union Family Room.
Additionally, the Graduate School will host a presentation by author Michael Shermer, founder and publisher of Skeptic magazine, Thursday, April 7, at 1 p.m. in the College of Education auditorium.
The annual symposium is an opportunity for graduate students in all disciplines to showcase their achievements by participating in either poster or oral presentations.
"The symposium enhances the institutional culture of innovativeness, intellectual curiosity, discovery and expansive scholarship," says Don Roth, dean of the UW Graduate School.
Concurrent oral presentations will be offered from 9 a.m. noon and from 2:30 5 p.m. both days. Poster sessions are scheduled from 3 5 p.m. Monday, and from 10 a.m. noon and from 2:30 5 p.m. Tuesday.
