21st Century Medicine Topic of Wednesday Talk

Oct. 17, 2005 -- Lee E. Babiss, vice president for preclinical research and development for Roche, will discuss, "Defining and Achieving Innovation in 21st Century Medicine," Wednesday, Oct. 19, at 1 p.m. in the University of Wyoming College of Arts and Sciences auditorium.

The speech, the latest in the Graduate School Distinguished Speaker Series, is free and open to the public.

At Roche, located in Nutley, N.J., Babiss is responsible for developing and directing oncology, metabolic diseases and inflammation research strategies. He is a member of the International Research Management Team and chairs both the Roche Biomarker Leadership Team and the Roche R&D Center China Scientific Board.

Babiss earned his Ph.D. in microbiology (1982) from Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he studied DNA tumor viruses. He began his postdoctoral career at Rockefeller University, studying molecular regulation of gene expression.

The author of more than 60 publications, Babiss serves on the board of the Center for Advanced Biotechnology and Medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and on the American Society of Microbiology Finance Board.
