May 12, 2005 -- Students in the University of Wyoming McNair Scholars program presented their research at an annual regional symposium and also at UW's recent Undergraduate Research Day.

The students were accepted into the McNair Scholars Program last fall. The program prepares promising undergraduate students from groups traditionally underrepresented in graduate education for entry into and successful completion of a doctoral degree program. The U.S. Department of Education funds UW's McNair Scholars Program at $291,600 annually.

Students eligible for the scholarship are those who are first generation college students who meet limited income guidelines or students who are members of ethnic groups that include Hispanic, African American or American Indian individuals.

McNair is a graduate school preparation program for students interested in earning a Ph.D. Services include a paid research internship of $3,600, mentoring from UW faculty, GRE (Graduate Record Exam) preparation classes, academic support and tutoring, and assistance with the graduate school application process. A minimum 3.0 grade point average is required and students must have completed 48 hours by the end of the 2004 fall semester.

Seven students presented research last month at the 10th annual Rocky Mountain McNair Research Symposium and Graduate Education Conference in Denver. Presenting their projects and their UW mentor were:
