July 6, 2007 -- Jennifer Murdock, counselor education doctoral graduate from Hot Springs, S.D., was selected to give the commencement address at the recent University of Wyoming College of Education ceremonies.
Murdock, the daughter of Bruce and Linda Murdock of Hot Springs and Lingle, Wyo., received her B.S. (1998) and M.S. (2000) degrees from Chadron State College. Her Ph.D. emphasis is in higher education.
In her speech she emphasized the important responsibility of educators to be "dream inspirers, not dream crushers." Murdock spoke about Sheryl Brost, her inspirational high school business instructor who still teaches at Hot Springs High School.
"She never put my dream of being First Lady down. She encouraged me and helped me to see my strengths," Murdock says. "Mrs. Brost was a dream inspirer who believed the impossible just might be probable. She was responsible for supporting my dream, however unlikely."
Murdock also spoke about students' responsibility to thank those who supported them in their educational journey and "to remember that support when presented with the opportunity to mentor a young person in our lives as UW College of Education graduates."
She has accepted a position as an assistant professor in the Department of Applied Psychology and Counselor Education at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley.
During the recent 117th commencement ceremonies, UW accorded degrees upon more than 1,450 students, including 1,124 undergraduates, 235 graduate students, 73 College of Law graduates and 46 School of Pharmacy graduates. The largest degree categories are bachelor of arts, 442; bachelor of science, 410; master of science, 89; and master of arts, 53.
