May 14, 2007 -- A free science workshop for middle and high school students, parents and teachers will be offered July 20-22, at the University of Wyoming.

The Science Posse will host the hands-on Exploring Science Summer Workshop, which includes all meals and lodging. The event is free, but participants must complete online registration at www.scienceposse.org by June 15. For more information about the program call Jesse Anderson at (307) 766-6310 or e-mail jessesa@uwyo.edu.

"This active learning experience will feature UW graduate students and Wyoming scientists exploring everyday science and highlighting research discoveries," Anderson says. "Lab tours will be available during the weekend workshop to give students and parents a firsthand look at the research environment."

The Science Posse, a UW Graduate School program, challenges students to "discover the excitement of science" by visiting classrooms and using a variety of formats to present intriguing research results to the public. The Science Posse receives funding from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.

Participants in the Exploring Science Summer Workshop will gain hands-on experience in numerous workshops, including "Think Inside the Box," a class to understand computers and their electrical components. In the "Introduction to Field Biology Techniques" workshop participants will receive a basic understanding of radio telemetry, clinometers, tracking spools and tree corers, and also the opportunity to use some of the equipment.

"Chemistry Detectives" will use basic chemistry lab techniques to discover the identity of unknown compounds.

Students also can attend a session to learn how to apply to college and professional schools. Teachers will receive information about new teaching strategies, including how to make and use a podcast for classroom and independent student enrichment.

Special activities for all participants will include a barbecue featuring the science of making ice cream and a GPS-guided scavenger hunt.

Exploring Science -- Laramie High School applied physics students recently worked with Tim Brothers, right, a University of Wyoming doctoral student in computer and electrical engineering, on a science project. The students learned how to program a LEGO Mindstorms robot to respond to the sound of their voice. Brothers is among instructors for a free summer "Exploring Science Summer Workshop," offered at UW.
