Nov. 13, 2006 -- University of Wyoming graduate student Sarah Garlick will present a slideshow of the first all-woman ascent of La Esfinge, a high natural wall in Peru, Thursday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. in the College of Business auditorium.

The show, "Painting Toenails at Base Camp: Alpine Rock Climbing in Peru and Patagonia," also features all-female ascents of granite spires in the Fitzroy region of the Argentine Patagonia.

Raised in Durham, N.C., Garlick started climbing in 1998 as a college student at Brown University in Providence, R.I. Although she enjoys all types of climbing, she says her true passion is alpine rock climbing, or "rockaneering." Among her many accomplishments, Garlick has climbed alpine routes in the Wind River Range, and three times has ascended Yosemite's challenging El Capitan vertical rock formation.

A member of the La Sportiva climbing team, Garlick will finish her master's thesis this December. Her research examines the structural geology and tectonics of Northern California's Klamath Mountains.
