USDA
EDUCATION PROGRAMS - CSREES
(WYO-2004-02529)
The USDA National Awards Program for Excellence in College and University
Teaching in the Food and Agricultural Sciences will continue to focus
national attention on the role of the teacher. Recognition and rewarding a
selected group of outstanding educators in the food and agricultural
sciences provides academics in the system a goal for which to strive. In
addition, dissemination of the efforts of the national program winners
provides models for similar educational programs at individual colleges and
universities. The collaborative aspect of having teaching award recipients
assume meaningful roles in planning and conducting the four regional
teaching improvement workshops will enhance the dissemination process and
optimize professional development of educators nationally. The improved and
expanded visibility and dissemination of outcomes and resources, via a
single national website, will benefit all of the programs. The program
solidifies the USDA's leadership position in the development of human
capital for the nation's food and agricultural system. The awards program is
another highly visible activity that demonstrates the role of the USDA in
science education. The collaborative efforts for enhancing the annual
teaching improvement workshops further strengthens our human capital by
capitalizing on identified teaching expertise among food and agricultural
scientists. The collaborative approach of melding websites into a single
academic related website further enhances national visibility of several
significant USDA sponsored projects.
