
Uptake, Distribution, and Elimination of L-Selenomethionine - WYO-00566
Selenium from natural sources such as seleniferous forages behaves differently in the mammalian body than does Se from "chemical" sources such as feed supplements. Preliminary work in this lab has shown that selenomethionine (the form in question) accumulates to higher levels and persists longer than inorganic Se, thus safety data derived from experience with feed supplements, etc. cannot be used to predict the likelihood of human exposure as a result of eating meat from cattle raised on seleniferous pastures. The purpose of this project is to develop the basic pharmacokinetic model which will permit us to answer the question "is such meat safe for consumers?"
