Oct. 8, 2003 -- Gay Awareness Month activities are underway at the University of Wyoming.

The UW student group, SPECTRUM, sponsors events that include a panel discussion, a presentation from a cast member of the MTV show, "Real World," an art exhibit and concert.

During the remainder of the week, representatives from "Heaven Sent Me Denver" will be selling items in the Wyoming Union.

Keynote speaker Chris Beckman from the "Real World" in Chicago (season 11), will speak Friday, Oct. 10, at 9 p.m. in the Wyoming Union Gardens. SPECTRUM co-sponsors the event with Friday Night Fever, PACMWA (President's Advisory Council on Minority and Women's Affairs) and the Student Advisory Committee.

Beckman, an artist, also will showcase his work in the Wyoming Union's ASUW gallery this month. A reception for Beckman is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 13, with a time to be announced.

A panel discussion on gay issues, including legislative action and the Matthew Shepard murder, is Monday, Oct. 13, at noon in the Wyoming Union Family Room.

Feminist Asian-American music artist and lecturer Magdalen Hsu-Li will perform Wednesday, Oct. 15, at 9 p.m. in the Wyoming Union ballroom. Her work and music focus on Asian, women, GLBT, and diversity/multiculturalism issues. Magdalen wrote "Laramie," a song featured on her newest album, "Fire," after visiting Laramie in 1999.

A GLBT and multiculturalism panel is set for Thursday, Oct. 16, at noon in the Wyoming Union Family Room.

SPECTRUM, Friday Night Fever and Campus Activities Center, and other UW groups, will sponsor a Halloween dance Friday, Oct. 31, during Family Weekend. Casino games, music, dancing, a costume contest, prizes and additional activities are planned.
