Advocacy With Faculty & Staff

As a student, you have to interact with a multitude of people in the campus community. This can sometimes present a challenge, especially when you need to speak to someone regarding disability related issues that affect you academically, such as using test accommodations through our office. Each person comes to the University community with a unique personality, unique outlooks toward their disability and unique experiences from their past efforts to deal with their disability. UDSS is here to help you interact with faculty and staff, to intercede at times when you don’t feel comfortable, or to help if there are problems that come up.

UDSS can be the “middle man,” who, with your permission, will let your instructors and other university staff know that you do have a disability, and what the appropriate accommodations are for the disability. UDSS staff do not reveal the nature of a student's disability unless permission has been given to do so, or unless there is an educational need to know. If you feel this information would help your instructor understand more about what you need to have equal access, you may share this information with your instructor.
