Financial Aid/Scholarship Resources

The primary sources of financial assistance for all UW students are the various programs offered through Student Financial Aid. Federally sponsored grants, loans, and work-study programs, as well as a variety of scholarship opportunities are coordinated by the Student Financial Aid office. Applications (through UW) for the Summer term are due by March 1 of each year to ensure first consideration of aid available. This form is apparently NOT necessary for the spring and fall semesters.  The FAFSA form is only necessary for these semesters.  Information about this and other forms can be found at the Student Financial Aid website at http://uwadmnweb.uwyo.edu/SFA/

The FAFSA form must also be completed by March 1st for all semesters that you are planning on attending next year, (i.e. if you are planning on attending summer, fall, and spring semesters that is what needs to be on your FAFSA).  The FAFSA can be completed online at: www.FAFSA.ed.gov.  This means you will probably have to estimate your income from the previous calendar year to get the FAFSA in on time.  Don't worry, it's okay to estimate.  Opportunities for corrections are available later.  Don't miss the March 1st deadline.  When you submit your FAFSA form, you are automatically considered for 250 general scholarships through the UW Student Financial Aid office.  The newest edition to the scholarship family is the Hathaway Scholarship.

There are a few local scholarships available for students with disabilities at the local level.  The Kuehne Scholarship is available, through the Student Financial Aid office, for students with disabilities who are veterans and has an application deadline of February 3rd.  The Bernice A. Bettis Scholarship is available through the UDSS office and has a deadline toward the end of April.  (Notification will be sent out in a timely manner to provide information about application processes and deadlines.)  Finally, the Laramie Plains Lions Club awards a scholarship each semester to a deserving student who has either a visual impairment or a hearing impairment (it has been a $600 award in the past).  Notification of the availability of applications for this scholarship is sent to potential applicants each semester.

There are several other scholarships which are awarded at the regional and national level.  UDSS offers limited information about various local, regional, and national scholarship opportunities for individuals with disabilities.  Ask your coordinator if you are interested in this information.  Also, check the Financial Aid booklet produced by the Office of Multicultural Affairs.  Finally, the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) offers assistance with training for qualified individuals for whom a college degree is the best way to achieve employment.  For more information on services and support offered by DVR, contact their office at 745-3160 (V/TTY).

There are many excellent web-based opportunities to research scholarships.   Some of the sites include: www.fastweb.com, www.scholaraid.com, www.fastaid.com, and www.freschinfo.com.  An all inclusive website for disability-related scholarship information is: www.AAPD.com.  Go to the scholarship link on the home page and you will find an extensive list of scholarship links.  To contact UW Student Financial Aid, call 766-3790, TTY: 766-3635.  You may also e-mail them at: finaid@uwyo.edu.
