Note-taking services may be requested by students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, who have learning disabilities affecting auditory discrimination, or who have hand function limitations. Note-takers are generally volunteers who are taking the same class. UDSS advocates with instructors for their assistance in locating qualified note-takers in individual classes. Note-taking paper is available free of charge from the UDSS office. Students also have the option of arranging a loan of notes from the note-taker long enough to use one of the copy machines on campus, or to bring the notes to the UDSS office where we will copy them for you at no charge (for note-taking service eligible students only). Students who opt to use note-taking paper are responsible for picking up a supply from UDSS and providing it to the note-taker.
Remember that the best notes are those you create. Using someone else’s notes has several disadvantages. These notes are another person’s interpretation of what is important from a lecture, and may not necessarily match what you would consider important. Legibility and clarity can also be problems when the notes are not your own. Finally, borrowing, copying and returning another student’s notes may be difficult and inconvenient for both the note-taker and the student.
UDSS encourages students whose hearing is not impaired to tape record lectures to use for review of notes, whether the notes are yours or borrowed from someone else. Recorded lectures are a wonderful study tool as they provide a back-up source of information from the class.
