Students who are Deaf or hard-of-hearing and who use sign language or speech reading as a means of communication may request Interpreter Services from UDSS. UDSS hires, supervises, and schedules Interpreters (or Signers*) to interpret class lectures, laboratory and class discussion sections. Interpreters may also be scheduled for meetings with tutors, instructors, advisors, Student Affairs professionals, or at University events (such as lectures, performances, graduation etc.).
To ensure that arrangements for interpreting services can be made appropriately, requests for oral or sign language interpreting services for classes and other academic related situations need to be made through the Interpreter Services Coordinator in a timely manner to ensure assignments of Interpreters (or Signers) can be made appropriately. The Interpreter Services Coordinator will consult with the students to discuss assignments of Interpreters (or Signers) to ensure a good “fit” between the student and service provider, make contact with course instructors to inform them of the student who has enrolled in their class, and provide the instructor with information on working with Interpreters/Signers and students who are hearing impaired.
Students are responsible for contacting the Interpreter Services Coordinator if they do not plan to attend class or other scheduled events so the Interpreter/Signer can be notified. Service providers are paid for the entire class period (including mileage and hourly travel if from out of the city or state) if they are not notified in advance of a cancellation. Therefore, failure to show up for three consecutive classes without notifying designated staff may result in suspension of Interpreter Services, until the student has met with their coordinator and a renewed understanding of the procedures has been achieved.
Students wishing to arrange for private interpreting services, for which they are responsible for payment, may utilize the UDSS office for assistance in contacting qualified Interpreters.
*Due to the scarcity of interpreters in this area it is necessary, on occasion, to employ signers as interpreters. UDSS is aware that this is not an ideal arrangement and appreciates the understanding of Deaf and hard-of-hearing consumers. Every effort will be made to ensure qualified professionals are assigned to each class or event.
