Part of our effort to assist you includes helping you obtain equipment that will aid in communication or in accessing printed material in other formats. Equipment available for loan includes:
4 Track Playbacks
These machines play the 4-track cassettes available from the Utah State Library
and from the UDSS local lending library. Your coordinator will assist you in filling out the necessary forms
for referral to the Wyoming Services for the Visually Impaired
so that you may borrow a machine from this agency. UDSS also has a limited
number of playbacks available to loan.
DAISY CD Players
Digitally recorded books from RFB&D require the use of specially adapted CD players. UDSS has a supply of these players, as well as standard CD players, available for loan to qualified students.
If you have a problem with the operation of your machine, contact your coordinator.
TTY
To better serve individuals with speech or hearing impairments, UDSS has a
TTY. One of the phone numbers listed under SEO connects the caller to an
available TTY (Teletypewriter, also known as a Telecommunication Device for the
Deaf). That number is 766-3073. Please ask us about resources for
finding a TTY for more permanent needs. UDSS also has a supply of local
and state-wide TTY directories, as well as information about Wyoming Relay.
Be sure to ask your coordinator if you would like more information.
Alpha Smart Pro/Dana
This portable note-taking device consists of a standard keyboard and small
screen. You can type notes using the keyboard or by writing with the Dana
stylus directly onto the screen. It's easy to use and can be very handy
for taking class notes. Cables are available to download files to your
computer or printer.
Laptop Computers
Laptop computers are available for you to use outside of the MTC lab.
Two laptop computers are available and include programs such as Dragon Naturally
Speaking, Jaws, WindowEyes, Zoom Text, and Inspiration.
Clarity CarryMate/Amigo
The CarryMate is a portable video magnifier with an 11.3" viewing screen
that allows students to magnify the words and images on a chalk/marker board in
class, slideshow presentations given by a professor, or a notebook that you may
use to take notes. The Amigo is simple to use--just place it directly on
the material and adjust the magnification by a turn of the dial. You can
use it to read notes, textbooks, or other class/study materials.
Other Equipment
UDSS can also loan out various and sundry things such as headphones for the
cassette players, Franklin Spellers, etc. Ask us and we'll tell you
if we have what you're thinking of!
