Assistive Listening Devices

Students with hearing impairments or learning disabilities (including students with attention related disabilities) that affect auditory discrimination, may benefit from the use of assistive listening systems in classes or at university programs. Here’s how they work:

The unit is portable, wireless and battery-powered. In each class, you give the instructor the lapel microphone unit and you keep the receiver unit. You listen through a neck loop (if you have a hearing aid), head set, or a small earphone. The instructor’s voice comes through the system clearly and distinctly and the volume can be adjusted according to each individual’s preference.

Many students have found this system effective in helping them focus on the instructor’s voice and filter out background noises in the room. Problems associated with instructor habits of moving around the room or talking while they face the blackboard are eliminated by using an assistive listening device.

Referrals for an assistive listening device loan can be made by your UDSS coordinator. See your coordinator to determine if you qualify.
