Surgical Technology

Surgical Technologists work with surgeons, anesthesiologists, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel to prepare the operating room for surgery by making sure all the instruments are present and properly sterilized for each procedure.  Surgical Technologists often help to  transport the patient to the operating room, position them for surgery, and monitor the patient during and after the procedure.

Surgical technologists most often work in hospital operating rooms but may also be stationed in delivery rooms, emergency rooms, and in central supply departments. Increasingly, technologists may work in outpatient surgery settings such as  physician or dental offices where minor surgery is performed, and in other facilities that require a sterile environment specialist.

The length of training ranges from nine months to 24 months, depending on whether a certificate, diploma, or associate's degree is awarded.
