CHAP minutes from 1/16/08
ON-GOING
PROJECTS
Senior
Housing
1. Grocery Delivery - Elise Scicluna talked
about the need for volunteers to continue grocery delivery. This is a
very worthwhile project. You get to know the residents and your visit may
very well be the highlight of their week…... and yours! A sign-up sheet
was circulated.
2. Sit-ercise –
Anna Davenport talked about this class which is offered every Tuesday and
Thursday morning from 10-10:30am at Senior Housing. Residents
really enjoy this activity and are stronger and more active as a result.
Let me know if you’re interested in helping out – they really need more help.
3. Computer set-up/Social activities
–Senior Housing is working on getting Bresnan Communications in place.
New computers have been donated and will be located in the common areas on each
floor. The used computers that were donated will go to residents who
would like to have them in their apartments. Jessica Latourelle expects
this project to be ready to go within the next couple of weeks. Several
volunteers are needed to teach computer basics
to residents. You don’t need a high level of expertise, just a desire to
teach, to develop a new friendship, and to have some fun.
Head Start Health Fair
CHAP
has participated in the Head Start Health Fair for the past 3 years. The
Fair will be held at the Civic Center, February 28, from 10am-3pm.
Shantelle Rust volunteered to head up the committee to develop ideas for
a story board, order give-aways for the 92 Head Start
kids, and set up a schedule of folks to work the booth. Eleven people
volunteered to help out on this committee. Dental Health was
suggested as a topic.
FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES
AED
1. AED is sponsoring a blood drive in
February. Katie Messer will get back to us with the date.
2. AED has invited CHAP to have a joint
Health table at the Club and Org day on Thursday, January 31 from 10am-3pm.
FACE AIDS
FACE
AIDS is a student campaign to mobilize and inspire students to fight AIDS in
Africa. Just buying the $5 pin provides enough funding to help 12 AIDs victims
for 1 day of treatment. Whitney Chandler encouraged interested students
to attend FACE AIDS meetings held every Wednesday, Ross Hall 409, at 1pm.
Camp Wapiyapi
Camp
Wapiyapi is a camp for kids with cancer and their
siblings. The camp is in need of volunteer companions. Each
companion is paired up with child. Chase Stonecipher, who was a companion last
summer, encouraged students to start their applications now for the June camps. For more information go to http://www.wapiyapi.org/
Health Professions Information
Fair
A
Health Professions Information Day will be held this year on Saturday, March 8th,
2008 from 11:00-2:00 pm on the undergraduate campus of the University of
Colorado at Boulder. Contact Lisa Shipley or Craig Vaske in Student
Advising to get the details.
Health Occupations Dinner
CHAP
holds a Health Occupations Dinner each Spring and Fall
semester and invites 3 healthcare professionals to come talk about their
careers to students. This semester you have suggested having a
neurologist, a nurse midwife, and an OB/GYN speak at the Spring
dinner. Whitney Chandler, Katie Messer, and Heather Logan have
volunteered to contact people in these specialties to speak at our dinner on
Sunday, March 2, 5-pm- 7pm. I’ll let you know the location closer to the
date. Mark your calendars!
Dental Health
Christel
Walrath, Community Oral Health Program Coordinator for Wyoming Department of
Health, would like to talk to students interested in health sciences about the
need for education on teeth in relation to total health. Cathy will
contact her to speak at the February CHAP meetings.
Next CHAP meeting is Thursday, January 31, HS 449, 12-1, lunch
