Specific Scholarship Information


Note: Peak, Pride, and Promise Scholarships will no longer be offered to new students after Fall 2009. They have been replaced by the Wyoming Scholars and Rocky Mountain Scholars scholarships. Click here for more information about these and other scholarships.

 

  • Robert C. Byrd Scholarship. Available to exceptionally able graduating high school seniors who are U.S. citizens or nationals, regardless of which college they plan to attend. Applications are available from high school guidance offices. The award is worth $1,500. For more information, contact your state Department of Education. In Wyoming, call 307-777-6202.


  • County Commissioners' Scholarship. Available to residents of Wyoming who are graduating from high school. Awards are generally for the amount of tuition and fees at UW or at a Wyoming community college. Application should be made directly to the Board of County Commissioners in the applicant's county of residence.


  • Paul Douglas Teacher Scholarship Program. These awards are currently not available for Wyoming high school graduates although graduates in other states may contact their high school counselors for information.


  • Hathaway Scholarship Opportunities at UW.

    Three levels of the Hathaway Scholarship are available to students at UW: Opportunity, Performance, and Honors. Qualifying for a Hathaway Scholarship, does not automatically qualify a student for admission to UW. Please see the UW Admissions Web site at www.uwyo.edu/admissions for admission requirements.

  • Hathaway Eligibility Requirements for Current UW Students.

    Fulltime students who are currently receiving the Hathaway Scholarship while attending UW are required to successfully complete at least 12 Hathaway-eligible credit hours each semester to remain eligible for the award.

    Part-time students who are currently receiving the Hathaway Scholarship while attending UW are required to successfully complete at least 6 Hathaway-eligible credit hours each semester to remain eligible for the award.

    Students who are receiving the Hathaway Scholarship at the Honors and Performance levels are required to maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA. A cumulative GPA between 2.25 and 2.5 will result in loss of the Honors or Performance level award, moving the student to the Opportunity level award for the next academic year. If the student achieves a 2.5 cumulative at a later time, they will regain their original Honors or Performance level award. Failure to maintain the 2.25 cumulative GPA will result in loss of the Hathaway award.

    Students who are receiving the Hathaway Scholarship at the Opportunity level are required to maintain a 2.25 cumulative GPA Failure to maintain the 2.25 cumulative GPA will result in loss of the Hathaway award. If the student achieves a 2.25 GPA at a later time, they will regain the Opportunity award.

    All Hathaway students must maintain continuous enrollment in the Fall and Spring semesters each academic year. Continued eligibility is checked annually, only at the end of each Spring semester.

  • John W. Hoyt Scholarship. The John W. Hoyt Scholarship is available to Wyoming residents who transfer to the University of Wyoming from a Wyoming community college with an Associate's degree. For more information click here.

     

  • Northern Arapaho Tribal Scholarship. These scholarships are available to enrolled members of the Northern Arapaho Tribe. Application should be made to Sky People Higher Education, P.O. Box 8480, Ethete, WY 82520, at least six weeks prior to the beginning of the school term. A form from the Agency must be completed by the appropriate financial aid office before the award can be made. Amounts vary and the awards may be used at any Wyoming institution of post-secondary education.


  • Richardson Scholarship. Available to graduates of public high schools in Cheyenne and Casper, Wyoming. This scholarship is funded by a private endowment created by the Richardson family. Recipients must demonstrate financial need by submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). To continue receiving this scholarship, a student must maintain at least a UW grade point average of 2.00 or better and complete 12 credit hours each semester. Each student may receive up to eight semesters of support until a first bachelor's degree is earned.


  • Shoshone Tribal Scholarship. Available to enrolled members of the Eastern Shoshone Tribe, these awards are based on financial need. Applicants should contact the Shoshone Higher Education Program, P.O. Box 628, Fort Washakie, WY 82514, at least six weeks before the beginning of the school year. Amounts vary and the scholarships may be used at any institution of post-secondary education.


  • Sundin Scholarship. Available to graduates of public high schools in Rawlins, Wyoming. This scholarship is funded by a UW endowment created by Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Sundin. To continue receiving this scholarship, a student must maintain a UW grade point average of 2.00 or better and complete 12 credit hours each semester. Each student may receive up to nine semesters of support until a first bachelor's degree is earned.


  • Superior Students in Education Scholarship. Available each year to sixteen new Wyoming high school graduates who plan to teach in Wyoming. The award covers costs of undergraduate tuition at the University of Wyoming or any Wyoming community college. A total of ten semesters of the scholarship may be used by the recipient in a teacher preparation program while seeking a first bachelor's degree. Applications are accepted annually during the month of October. Application forms are distributed by the University of Wyoming College of Education and are available from Wyoming high school counselors.


  • University of Wyoming Alumni Association Scholarship. Graduating seniors in the top third of the class who are active in extra-curricular activities in their communities and at Wyoming high schools may apply for this scholarship, made available by the UW Alumni Association. Seven new awards are made each year for $1,500 per year for up to four years (no summers). The UW Alumni scholarship committee selects the recipients, who, along with the high school counselor, must complete the Alumni Scholarship application. This application must be accompanied by copies of the applicant's transcript and two letters of recommendation - one from a high school staff member and one from a community member. In addition, the applicant must have been admitted to UW. The application deadline is March 1 and application forms become available after December 1 at counselors' offices or from the UW Alumni Association at (307) 766-4166. This scholarship may not be used in conjunction with the President's Promise or the Trustees' Pride Scholarship, or with other awards specifically designated for the payment of tuition and fees.


  • University of Wyoming Alumni Association Out-of-State Scholarship. Out-of-state graduating high school seniors who are sons or daughters of a UW graduate may apply for this award after December 1. Applications may be obtained from the UW Alumni Association, 214 S. 14th Street, Laramie, WY 82070-4119, phone (307) 766-4166. The application must be completed by both the applicant and the high school counselor, and must be accompanied by a copy of the applicant's transcript and two letters of recommendation - one from a high school staff member and one from a community member. In addition, the applicant must have been admitted to UW. The scholarship application deadline is March 1. Applicants must be in the top third of their class and must have participated in a broad range of extra-curricular activities. Two of these awards are given each year, for $1,500 each, and they may be used for a total of four years (no summers). The UW Alumni Association scholarship committee makes the selection.


  • University of Wyoming Honors Program Stipend. This award is available to students accepted to the UW Honors Program. Graduating high school seniors must have a composite ACT score of at least 28, or a combined SAT score of 1240, or a high school GPA of at least 3.7. Recipients are selected by an Honors Program committee and, once chosen, may use this award for a total of eight semesters of full-time undergraduate enrollment toward a first bachelor's degree, as long as a 3.25 UW cumulative GPA is maintained. No application is required for renewal but initial applications from high school seniors must be received by February 1. They can be obtained from the director, UW Honors Program, P.O. Box 3413, Laramie, WY 82071-3413, phone (307) 766-4110.


  • University of Wyoming National Merit Scholarship. High school seniors who attain Finalist standing in the National Merit Scholarship Program, who meet other published eligibility criteria, and who have designated UW as their first-choice institution to the National Merit Corporation, may be offered a UW National Merit Scholarship. The awards vary in value from $500 to $2,000, depending on the applicant's documented need as calculated from the FAFSA by the federal processor. Students with no documented need, based on UW costs, or those who do not file the FAFSA, may receive the minimum $500 award. Applicants and their families should file the FAFSA in early January and have results sent to UW [Federal School Code 003932] in order for financial need to be determined. The number of awards varies, but typically between four and six students are chosen. Selections are made by the UW Office of Student Financial Aid in early spring; students who later designate UW as their first-choice institution may be considered if funds remain. The UW National Merit Scholarship may not be used in conjunction with another National Merit scholarship.
