Scholarships are a form of assistance awarded according to certain selective criteria. These criteria can include factors such as academic excellence, skill in a particular field, financial need, or high school attended. The greatest thing about scholarships is they don't have to be paid back!
To apply for scholarships complete a University of Wyoming Application for Admission. Our Office will check to see if you qualify for any scholarships that UW administers. We don't administer every scholarship offered, so if you live in Wyoming you might want to apply for scholarships listed in the statewide scholarship book. You can also check out the scholarship search options. If you live outside of Wyoming, you can search our non-resident scholarship publication available online. There is also a graduate scholarship publication available online. Scholarships are awarded throughout the spring and summer, so if you don't hear immediately don't give up hope.
If you are selected for a scholarship that UW administers, you will be notified by a scholarship award letter. This is a special letter that will tell you what you need to know about your scholarship. If you are receiving other types of aid, the scholarship will also appear on your award notice, and it will be issued along with other aid you may be receiving.
If you are awarded a scholarship from another organization, UW does not always know how that organization will disburse your award to you. We prefer that you have the organization notify us of your scholarship and send the funds to us so that we can combine and issue them to you with your other aid, if you have any. Also make sure the donor specifies whether to issue the scholarship all at once or in two payments. If they do not specify, we will split the amount in half and issue it at the beginning of each semester. We'd like the funds from your donor agency by Aug. 1.
If you receive a scholarship, you may find that other sources of aid, such as your Stafford Loan, were (or will be) decreased. We may reduce the amount of loan, grant or work-study aid if your scholarship, plus your other aid, equals an amount greater than your need. We will never reduce your Pell Grant for this reason, though. Having your aid rearranged could be upsetting, but it's really in your best interest, because you'll usually be borrowing less money and receiving more in gift assistance.
