Kemmerer

Fossil Butte National Monument located in Kemmerer, Wy

Location

Located amid the Rocky Mountains, high desert, three million acres of public land, and farm land of southwestern Wyoming, Kemmerer calls itself the Fossil Fish Capital of the World. In 1843, explorer John C. Fremont first discovered the coal that the town developed around. 1902 saw James Cash "JC" Penney coming to town to open his first store in the then booming mining town. That original J.C. Penney store is still open for business. Fossil Butte National Monument is just west of town, and the area also includes world-class hunting, fishing, hiking, and skiing.

Medical Facilities

South Lincoln Medical Center is a 16 bed acute care facility with a 24 bed long term care facility attached and a primary care Family Practice Clinic located in the Medical Center building. It also includes two satellite clinics in Cokeville and LaBarge.

Climate

Kemmerer's summer days are pleasant with the temperatures seldom reaching 90° and low humidity. In autumn, the nights and mornings become crisp but the days are still sunny. Winter brings snow and cold temperatures, but the sun is still around most days. The spring rains encourage the wildflowers to bloom, with a little help from the sun.
