Diagnostic Test - LICENSED

Over ten million individuals are screened for asthma in the United States annually. Those who suffer asthma are generally treated as a homogeneous population, leading to similar diagnoses for all asthmatics. Due to this homogeneous method of treatment, asthmatics often receive treatment that is ineffective and expensive primarily because differences between asthmatics have gone unnoticed in the past. Asthmatics currently spend over $200 a month for these ineffective treatments.

However, recent research has shown that not all asthmatics suffer from the same types of asthma, creating the need for a diagnostic test that can distinguish between the types of asthmas suffered by different patients and therefore identify the most effective method of treatment early in the process. A diagnostic tool that can do this could potentially save millions of dollars spent annually by asthmatics, federal assistance programs, and insurance companies.

Researchers in the University of Wyoming’s Family and Consumer Sciences Department have spent the past few years working on a diagnostic test that can identify the type of asthma that a person suffers from and thereby identify the most effective form of treatment. This test has the potential to save money for individuals who suffer from asthma as well as companies who use current diagnostic tests.

A prototype for this technology is currently in development.

This technology is protected under published PCT application, WO 03049599A2 and under US Utility application US 2005/0036843.
