Freshman Interest Groups (FIGs)

Add spark to your university experience by joining a Freshman Interest Group (FIG). FIGs offer a "no hassle" way to begin life at the University of Wyoming. Instead of making your way through those first research papers, exams, and study sessions alone, you'll be a part of a team of learners.

A FIG is a group of no more than 20 students with similar educational goals who take selected classes together and share a common living arrangement. FIGs are available in many different colleges and departments.

FIGs are organized to cover specific interests ranging from agriculture to zoology. Whether you have decided on a major or are looking around before making up your mind, there is probably a FIG for you. If you are interested in engineering, contact the College of Engineering about their Power Groups, a program similar to FIGs.

Becoming involved in campus life is a proven key to success in college. If you join a FIG, you'll make the most of your education through both organized and informal meetings with UW faculty members and other students. You'll find your place and identity within a large university.
Benefits of joining a FIG:

  • You have a ready-made study group of people who are taking many of the same classes. Study groups help students earn higher grades and they make learning more fun.

  • When you sign up for a FIG, you are automatically enrolled in three or four classes. Many FIG classes can lead to possible majors, and all meet University Studies requirements. Your academic advisor will help you with those choices.

  • You will be living in a residence hall with others in your FIG. FIGs offer exciting, shared learning and living environments that will launch you into a fun and stimulating freshman experience.

Intensive Study Community

This residential setting is designed for students who would like to help developing their study, testing, and time management skills in a quieter living environment. The floor community will establish expanded "quiet hours" at the beginning of the year and a small computer lab is available for use by the community residents only.

Substance-Free Living Community

Students who live on these floors value a substance-free lifestyle. You and your guests will agree not to possess, consume, distribute, or store alcoholic beverages, tobacco, and/or other controlled substances on this floor, regardless of age. Numerous special events, community service activities, and the substance-free living environment are enjoyable benefits to selecting these floors.

Co-ed Community

Most of our residence hall floors are set up as co-ed floors. Men and women reside on the same floor but are assigned to opposite wings, sharing a common lounge area. Gender-appropriate bathrooms are designated on each wing.

Engineering Community

You may choose these floors if you are an engineering major. Engineering floor residents are provided with programs to supplement their classes. Faculty, tutors and peer advisers provide academic support. A convenient computer lab that is connected to the College of Engineering computer network is available.

Honors Community

Students who are selected for the Honors Program are housed together in a residential community that offers interaction with other honor students and for a deeper knowledge of academic subjects. For more information about the Honors Program, contact the UW Honors Program, Room 102 Merica Hall, Laramie, WY 82071; (307) 766-4110. You must be enrolled, or have a roommate enrolled, in the Honors Program to live on these floors.
