Room Assignments and Your Room

Room Assignments

Choosing a room is a simple process. To get started, you will want to read the assignment viewbook carefully to understand your many living options. Then you should complete and return the Residence Life & Dining Service Contract. If you have not received an application packet, please contact us.

A security deposit of $100 must accompany your contract and may be a check, money order, cashier's check, or credit card. (Please do not send cash.)

Send your contract and deposit as soon as possible -- especially if you want a single room or a special/academic interest floor, because they fill up quickly and are assigned on a date priority basis. The assigning of rooms to new students begins after Spring Room Selection and continues through the opening of the halls in August. Your room assignment, with the name and telephone number of your roommate, will be mailed to your permanent address in May or as quickly as possible if your request is received after May. Prior to your August arrival, you will receive information about checking into the residence halls and what to bring for your room.

Roommates

Having a roommate may be a new experience for you, just as moving to a new community may be. If you have a friend who will also be attending UW with whom you wish to room, please request that person on the contract when you apply. Mail both contracts together and, remember, you must both request each other as roommates. Please send your contracts as soon as possible -- the priority deadline for roommate requests is May 1, 2006.

Should one of you change your plans, a new roommate will be assigned. You may request a change at any time before the residence halls open, and you must let the staff in the Residence Life & Dining Services office know of your request in writing. Please mail us a letter or send e-mail to reslife-dining@uwyo.edu. Roommate requests cannot be guaranteed; however, residence life staff will make every effort to accommodate your request.

If you do not request a particular individual, a person with similar interests (as indicated on your application) will be assigned as your roommate. You are strongly encouraged to contact your roommate during the summer and get to know each other before you arrive at UW.

During the first two weeks of fall semester, student requests to move to other rooms, floors, and halls will be restricted to emergency situations only. A date-priority listing will be used to notify you of vacancies. You must check out of your current residence hall room with your Resident Assistant, and complete a change of status form and room condition sheet before moving to the new room/hall assignment.

Room Consolidation

If you are paying rates for a double room, but remaining as the single occupant when vacancies occur, you will be given a few options for consolidation. If you wish to continue paying the double occupancy rate, you may:

  • choose another resident to move in with you.

  • move in with another resident of your choice who doesn't have a roommate (ask your Area Coordinator for a list of residents also needing roommates)

  • allow the Residence Life and Dining Services staff  to assign you a roommate

  • If a student fails to accept an assigned roommate disciplinary actions and additional charges may be assessed.

Spring Room Selection

In early spring, current residents have an opportunity to sign up for the room, floor, or hall of their choice for the next academic year. (Some rooms or living options may not be available.)

Handicap Access or Special Needs

Students with disabilities who need special equipment supplied to their rooms or require handicap-accessible rooms should contact Residence Life & Dining Services, as well as Student Educational Opportunity (766-6189) as soon as possible. You should fill out the contract according to your needs. Attach further information to your contract if necessary. Wheelchair-accessible rooms are currently available in Hill, Orr, and McIntyre Halls.

Room Care

You are encouraged to personalize your room with items from home. Be creative! However, please take note of the following:

  • Residence Life & Dining Services provides beds that can be bunked or lofted in your room.  Loft kits are requested by indicating a loft kit on your contract. If you would like to request a loft kit and did not indicate your request on the contract please email our office at reslife-dining@uwyo.edu. No other beds or lofts will be permitted in the residence halls. Hill Hall has only the option of lofting the bed because only one bed is provided in each room.

  • Keep your room clean and safe.

  • You may not paint or alter your room in any way without written permission from the facilities manager (766-6503).

  • Keep signs and banners off your outside doors, windows, or exterior of building.

  • Waterbeds are not allowed.
