Getting Involved in Your Residence Hall

There are many Leadership Opportunities with Residence Life and Dining Services. You can be involved in your residence hall community by participating in the Residence Halls Association or Hall Senate. These groups have a strong voice in creating new policies, as well as planning and sponsoring programs and special events. You may also want to pursue a position as a Resident Assistant to become a mentor and leader for other students in the residence halls.

Residence Halls Association (RHA)

RHA is the student governing body of the residences halls.  RHA Executive Board members are elected and appointed students that live in each of the halls and serve as guides for the hall senates and the RHA Counsel.  The RHA Executive Board and the RHA Counsel (comprised of the hall senate presidents and representatives) provide feedback to the administrative staff of Residence Life & Dining Services on policies, procedures, hall improvements, long-range plans, and even fee rates.  In addition to this advisory role, RHA sponsors programs and educational opportunities for residents in all of the halls.

Throughout the academic year opportunities to develop leadership skills at regional and national conferences will be available to RHA Counsel members and hall senates.  Ask your Resident Assistant or Assistant Hall Director about getting involved with RHA.

Hall Senates

Each hall has a senate that provides various programs and leadership opportunities in your hall. At the beginning of the year an election is held for the positions of president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer.

Hall senates are expected to represent the opinions of the residents they serve to the RHA Counsel on important policy and programmatic topics.  Hall senates will also work collaboratively with other hall senates and hall staff to provide fun and educational programming events for their hall.  Traditional programs such as “Laura White Night”, “Club Mac”, and “Safe-Treat for Halloween” are among the many events that are the product of hall senates and hall staff.

If you are interested in participating in hall senate contact your Resident Assistant or Assistant Hall Director for more information.
