I completed my Bachelor of Agricultural Sciences at Melbourne University (Australia) and then worked examining how the influence of environmental variables effect the malting quality of barley and how this can affect beer, need I say how good the conferences were?!  In 2001, I completed my Ph.D. at the University of Western Australia (Perth, Australia) where I investigated how the grazing in the Pilbara rangelands (1,750 km north of Perth) affects plant and basal cover, plant growth and production, nutrient cycling, stable abundance isotopes, as well as investigating the influence of spatial and temporal aspects of N-mineralization in the field and lab.  Since coming to Wyoming, my research has been focused on the area of reclaimed coalmine.  I developed a methodology to relatively quickly, easily and economically measure soil quality and health by comparing short-term (three days) microbial respiration to other know variables related to soil quality.  I am currently working on a project which is examining the influence that management practices can have on soil quality and carbon sequestration once land has been reclaimed.  I’m also working on a project for the ARS-USDA in Cheyenne examining the influence that various grazing regimes can have on soil C & N and soil microbial communities on a mixed-grass prairie ecosystem.  I am also working on a joint project with the ARS colleagues in both Cheyenne and Moines, IA, investigating how inter-seeding alfalfa in native rangelands on a ranch in Western South Dakota can increase soil
C & N, influence soil microbial communities and how changes in soil C & N can influence the production of greenhouse gases.
