The Clean Water Act requires regulation of non-point source pollution from public and private lands in Wyoming. These regulatory actions may profoundly impact Wyoming industries and landowners.

Faculty members from the Renewable Resources Department in cooperation with County Extension Educators, and the Wyoming Association of Conservation Districts are conducting intensive, 3-day training courses on watershed functions and the development of management strategies to minimize non-point source pollution. These short-courses also provide information on the collection, and analysis of water quality data. This course has also provided technical guidance to coal-bed methane producers, environmentalists and agency regulators in the Powder River Basin.
Watershed 101 will be conducted throughout Wyoming. To date, this course has been taught to over 300 ranchers, regulators, and conservationists. One recent participant stated that "Dr. Skinner is all Wyoming, and his delivery exudes interest, excitement, and a great capacity for teaching complex science to people who are not all on the same level". Educational activities, such as Watershed 101 provide solutions before natural resource conflicts develop.
