The major requires a total of 37 credit hours in core, concentration and elective courses plus 18 hours in a single foreign language (not including American Sign Language). The coursework in International Studies is distributed across several categories: foundation, core, concentration, and electives. To meet the foundation requirements majors are required to take INST 1010 (pro-seminar) prior to their final year and INST 4950 (capstone) their final year. Students majoring in international studies complete six hours in each of two core areas: 1) Lower Division: Foundations 2) Upper Division: International Systems
Students take six hours of elective courses from the program course guide. A course cannot simultaneously fulfill more than one requirement as a core area, concentration and elective course.
Courses not listed on the program guide may be accepted to fulfill degree requirements, based on a successful petition by the student to the director of the program. These may be topical seminars or occasionally offered courses appropriate to international studies.
Students are encouraged to obtain foreign experience by working, doing an internship, studying or traveling outside the United States. Opportunities are available through the Study Abroad office of International Programs.
Many international studies courses require prerequisites. Students are advised to take prerequisites that simultaneously satisfy University Studies Program requirements. Students are advised to satisfy the QB University Studies Program requirement by taking STAT 2070, Introductory Statistics for the Social Sciences.
All courses must be completed with a grade of C or better. Program course guides and check sheets can be obtained from either the International Studies Office. Core CoursesLower Division: Foundations
