Local Teachers Honored By UW Graduates

May 31, 2005 -- Graduates of the University of Wyoming Honors Program are honoring Wyoming teachers who have influenced their academic success.

The honorees were selected as the "pre-college teacher who was especially memorable as an influence on intellectual development or choice of career." The teachers were recognized at UW's recent 115th commencement. Each received a certificate for, "The positive influence you have had in shaping tomorrow's leader," and a letter of appreciation from Duncan Harris, UW Honors Program director.

The UW Honors Program offers students a sequence of challenging core courses, extracurricular activities and an independent research project within the major. Those who graduate from the program must have a 3.25 cumulative grade point average. Entering freshmen are admitted to the program on the basis of superior high school grade point average and high scores on national tests. Transfer students who have a 3.25 college GPA are also eligible to participate.

The honored teachers, schools and their nominating students and majors are:

BRIGHTON, COLO. -- Chris Smith, Brighton High School, Paul Hansen, computer science.

CHEYENNE -- Terry Reily, Cheyenne East High School, Robert J. Williams, political science.

DAYTON -- Virginia (Gin) Scott, Tongue River High School, Aminda O'Hare, psychology, and Coyle Neal, political science.

GILLETTE -- Donna Drew, Sheridan College/Gillette campus, Jacque Vineyard, political science, Sheridan.

KEMMERER -- Michael Clark, Western Wyoming Community College/Kemmerer Outreach, Sherry L. Adrianos, molecular biology.

RAWLINS -- Gary Kathan, Rawlins High School, Calista (Wilts) Selby, chemistry.

SAN RAMON, CALIF. -- Randy Kinavey and Rob Sloan, both California High School, Shannon Valenti, international studies.

SHERIDAN -- Larry Hutt, Sheridan High School, Jacque Vineyard, political science.
