The University of Wyoming's Clinical Psychology Doctoral (Ph.D.) program
is fully
accredited by the American Psychological Association*. The five-year program
consists of four academic years and a 12-month, APA accredited, pre-doctoral
internship. Clinical training at UW occurs within the
scientist-practitioner model. We emphasize training students as
psychological scientists who critically evaluate research literature and
approach therapy and assessment from a scientifically valid framework. Our
integrated behavioral health care focus has developed from a belief that
integration of the mind and body is essential for optimal health. To
achieve this goal, we believe psychologists should be trained to work
collaboratively with other health care providers in various medical and
behavioral health settings.
Some clinical students may pursue a concentration in developmental psychology, psychology and law, or social-personality with experimental graduate program faculty. These experimental concentrations are intended for those clinical students whose research and/or clinical interests would benefit from specialized training in one of the experimental subdisciplines. Generally, the curriculum for these students is a blend of the required clinical courses and courses in the chosen experimental area.
Although there are many careers available to clinical psychologists, all require adequate research knowledge. Research knowledge includes expertise in research methodology, design, statistics, and the ability to carry out an independent study; a broad familiarity with psychological science and the research related to areas of study in the program, such as psychopathology, psychotherapy, and individual areas of interest; the ability to evaluate research literature; and the ability to use the existing research literature to inform clinical activities. Knowledge of theory and technique gained in the classroom is applied to research and clinical work conducted under faculty supervision.
Our clinical faculty have expertise in empirically supported assessment and intervention methods. We have training in pediatric psychology, behavioral medicine, health psychology, and therapy in primary care settings, thus providing an excellent foundation for implementing our integrated behavioral health care program. Clinical faculty members have active research programs on depression, anxiety, developmental disabilities, and community based health promotion and post-traumatic stress disorders.
Students emerge from our program with solid clinical skills applicable in traditional settings, as well as skills for specialized work in a variety of medical and interdisciplinary settings. As scientist-practitioners, our graduates have research and clinical skills that are valuable in pursuing postdoctoral research fellowships and faculty positions.
