Outstanding sophomores in Wyoming's public and private high schools may be nominated by their teachers, counselors, or principals.  Students submit five-part applications, which are screened by the high schools and submitted to the University of Wyoming.  A faculty committee selects 100 participants who have many of the following characteristics:

     creativity,                                   imagination,

     curiosity,                                     initiative,

     enthusiasm about learning              insight

     life in general
