Introduction to Robotic & Computer Engineering

Jeff Anderson & Steven Barrett

Electrical Engineering Department

College of Engineering

Robotics is an exciting area of computer controlled technology.  Robotic applications are found in space exploration, product manufacturing, entertainment parks and even medicine.  We will identify and discuss the basic elements used in robotics.  These elements often include a computer or microprocessor, sensors, and actuators. We will use the LEGO Mindstorms Robotic Invention System to explore a variety of engineering challenges.  We will build and program robotic cars to follow lines, or stay in a box, collect data and even communicate with each other.  Previous knowledge of computer programming is not required.  We also plan to tour the University of Wyoming's hex-a-pod lab.

Have you ever wondered how computers work?  What makes them tick?  In this course we'll investigate the fundamentals of computer electronics.  We will start with the basics and work our way through the major components of a computer.  Along the way we'll take time out to do lab activities using actual computer "chips."  Also, we'll see how small computers can be used to control robots.  Come join the fun -- no experience necessary!

NOTE:  Each student will take both classes.  Students will switch half way through the three weeks.
