The Sketchbook as Art

Diana Baumbach, Assistant Lecturer

Art Department

College of Arts & Sciences

"The Sketchbook as Art" is an intensive study of the visual arts, as seen through the many applications of the artist's sketchbook.  The students will gain knowledge of artists' tools and working processes, as well as a greater appreciation of the visual arts.  This course is intended to provide hands-on, experiential learning.  Students will explore actual journals and books as well as unique sketchbooks and handmade books.  Together as a class, we will create Exquisite Corpse drawings, as practiced by the Surrealists in the 1920s.  This class will expose students to many techniques and concepts used by professional artists.  It will also allow them to sample many different methods of image making.
