There is no denying it the University of Wyoming is an exciting, vibrant place to be right now. Sometimes, my head spins when I think of all of the great things that are happening at the University of Wyoming.

We start this new school year on the heels of our most successful year ever in two important areas: research and private fundraising. The past fiscal year saw research funding at UW reach an all time high. A record $78 million was brought into UW through sponsored projects conducted by faculty and researchers on campus. This is the 22nd consecutive year that UW has set a new external funding record, and it is a tribute to our faculty to have sustained this level of momentum for so long in the research enterprise.

Private giving to UW also reached a new height in the last fiscal year with the university raising a record-setting $43 million in gifts from alumni, friends, and corporate sponsors. In addition, significant support for UW continues to be made available from the state's unique matching fund. Since 2001, UW has received over $84 million in state endowment matches and $43 million in state matches for academic facilities.

These incredible private dollars, and the unparalleled support from the Governor and the Legislature, have allowed UW to move forward on a number of fronts that will benefit our students far into the future.

If you haven't been to campus for a while, I think you will be amazed to see all of the changes that are occurring. Right now, there are over $152 million in capital construction projects underway. These facilities are designed with our students' learning experiences in mind. But as exciting as all of the construction is, it is the people and programs at UW that make a difference.

This fall, we welcome the largest group of entering new students in the history of the university. These new faces will be joining 10,000 other students who have come to Laramie from all 50 states and over 65 foreign countries. Our data indicates that students entering UW are better prepared for the rigors of university study than ever before. The vitality and enthusiasm of this special community keeps our 122-year-old institution dynamic and relevant. I invite and encourage you to become a part of what promises to be its incredibly bright future.
