About the Speaker: Professor of Spanish and Professor of Philosophy at the University of Wyoming, is the author of several books including Nueva lntroducciόn a Francisco Sánchez "EI Escéptico ", En torno a David Hume, La Vida Privada de John Stuart Mill, and David Hume: Escritos Epistolares, among others. He has translated into Spanish works by Hobbes, Berkeley, Locke, Hume, Burke, Mill and Veblen. Professor Mellizo is a member of the board of directors of the Ibero-American Association of Utilitarian Studies.

Brief Abstract:
The purpose of
this talk is to discuss hunting from a Utilitarian perspective, that is, as a
happiness-producing activity. Paradoxically enough, Nature has to be corrected
by artificial means in order to protect the spontaneous development and
preservation of game animals. Whether radical conservationists accept it or not,
the fact is that modern civilization is the only force which, however
imperfectly, can put a stop to the natural “crimes” perpetrated by Nature
itself. Mill’s message of alarm against naturalistic fervor is also discussed
