Graduate Assistantships are available to qualified students. Students who receive a full stipend are expected to work an average of 18-20 hours per week for the stipend. This might involve working as a teaching assistant, or a research assistant, or some combination of these. Typically this involves working as the teaching assistant for one class per semester. A teaching assistant for a course is expected to attend all lectures, to grade student work, to hold office hours, and to lead discussion sections (usually from one to three sections, and usually of around 20 students per section) as well as supplementary study sessions. In cases where acting as a teaching assistant for a class does not require the 18-20 hours of expected work (say, because of low course enrollment), the department might ask students to take on additional work responsibilities, such as helping to cover the T.A. duties for a second course, acting as a grader for a course, or acting as a research assistant for a faculty member
The stipends are in excess of $10,000 for a full-time appointment. Tuition waivers are usually given along with and in addition to the stipend. On some occasions, to provide partial support for more students, half-time teaching assistantships are awarded. Generally, because of the extra duties involved in holding such an appointment, awards are not made to students who wish to finish in less than four semesters, although special cases will be considered.
Students who intend to make application for a graduate assistantship are urged to do so early, so we can insure applications are complete. The deadline for application is February 1. Since the competition for financial support is keen, we must have all of the requested information to consider an applicant for these appointments.
