Pre-Collegiate Services

Multicultural Affairs sponsors and assists in the coordination of several programs geared toward high school students, both to give them a taste of the college experience here at UW and to provide them with more specific research and mentoring opportunities.  Below-listed are the programs in which we are most involved.

The Summer Research Apprentice Program (SRAP) is an intensive, seven week, paid summer research program held at the University of Wyoming.  High School sophomores (completed year), junior, and senior students are eligible.

SRAP is administered through Multicultural Affairs.

SRAP was designed in 1985 to provide qualified minorities the opportunity to gain first hand experience in science, mathematics, engineering, and other related science research.  SRAP is funded by UW's NSF EPSCoR Program, UW's EPA EPSCoR Program, Multicultural Affairs, and other grant and private sources.

Participants are chosen primarily, though not exclusively, from the Rocky Mountain region (including Nebraska and the Dakotas) to attend the program each summer.   According to interest, participants are paired with a University of Wyoming professor and spend their days in the laboratory performing various research experiments.

Research areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Chemistry
  • Energy Research
  • Molecular Biology
  • Statistics
  • Engineering
  • Zoology
  • Geology
  • Computer Science
  • Mathematics

This event is an exciting opportunity for ethnic minority students to obtain a real-life college experience. High school students are paired up with minority students on campus and shadow that student through two days of college classes and experiences.

The program begins with a welcome dinner, followed by an activity (most likely a UW basketball game). The night concludes with a dance. The unique aspect of the dance is that students who meet all UW criteria will have their application fees waived and will have the opportunity to sign paperwork and be accepted to the University of Wyoming on the spot.

The following day, high school students shadow college students, attending classes, meetings, and other school functions. The program concludes with a late lunch and an informative session on future steps in preparing for college.

Other than the cost of transportation, all accommodations, including room and board and basketball tickets will be provided free of charge for all students.
