If you want to take classes prior to your formalized acceptance, you will need to submit the non-degree-seeking application on the Graduate School web site to be able to register. You can take up to 12 credit hours prior to official acceptance and have those credits transferred to your program of study.
When taking courses prior to the semester of your official admittance to the master's/certificate program, it is extremely important that you are classified as a Non-Degree Seeking Graduate Student. If courses that are applicable to the master's program are completed with any type of undergraduate status, those will not be usable towards the graduate degree requirements. Classification (undergraduate versus graduate) is not determined by the level of the course taken but how you have applied and been admitted to UW.
Students that are finishing up requirements for the baccalaureate degree at UW and who are seeking to take graduate courses simultaneously must be sure to reserve those courses for graduate credit; otherwise, those will be applied to their undergraduate status and will not be usable towards the graduate degree requirements. Go to the Graduate School website (Forms and Publications) to access the 'Request to Reserve Coursework for Graduate Credit' petition. This petition must be completed prior to the semester in which the graduate course is to be taken.
If you have taken graduate level courses prior to your official admittance to the master's/certificate program and did not follow the above instructions and your courses are posted as undergraduate classification, please contact Debbie Shoefelt (shoefelt@uwyo.edu) at the Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing immediately to find out what your options may be for getting it corrected to reflect graduate classification.
