As part of your acceptance into the Master's Program, pursuing the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), Post-Master's Family Nurse Practitioner Certificate (CERT-FMNP), Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), or Post-Master's Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Certificate (CERT-PMHN) options, you will be expected to provide documentation and/or abide by the following School of Nursing policies and requirements. It is your responsibility to keep these requirements current throughout the completion of the program and to provide the School of Nursing with updated documentation. Failure to do so will result in your being prohibited from attending classes/clinicals. We recommend that you start obtaining/collecting the following information immediately upon notification of acceptance. DO NOT wait until the last minute, or you may not be able to meet the AUGUST 15 deadline. This deadline is for students accepted into the Spring 2008 PMHNP (and Post-Master's) program as well as for PMHNP and FNP students (and Post-Master's/Certificate program students) admitted for Fall 2008 semester. |

Drug screening may be required by some clinical sites.
All students admitted to the program are held responsible for knowledge of the content within the School of Nursing Composite Program Handbook. The handbook is found on our web site at this link: COMPOSITE PROGRAM HANDBOOK. The updated handbooks for each academic year will be available at that site starting in August of each year. Please become familiar with the Core Handbook section as well as the MS Program section.
Textbooks are available for purchase through the UW Bookstore.
If you are starting the program full-time this fall, you will be taking the first NP clinical course NURS 5006 (Advanced Health Assessment and Clinical Decision Making). You will have 60 hours of clinical associated with this course. The clinical hours will be spent primarily with a Nurse Practitioner (NP) preceptor, however, you will also be spending time in Laramie and Cheyenne with NP faculty in their clinical site. We typically try to arrange the times in Laramie and Cheyenne so that they are connected with a class weekend for those coming from out of town. You will be contacted in July by the NP Clinical Coordinator so that we can arrange a clinical placement for you for the fall. You will be able to start clinical in September, after the first weekend class for NURS 5006, but must have documentation of all required immunizations, CPR, RN licensure and malpractice in place prior to the start of clinical.
Direct patient/client care in a variety of clinical practice sites form an integral part of the nurse practitioner program. Clinical placements are viewed as an extension of previous classroom activities. Students will be expected to perform in a professional manner and demonstrate growth towards a life of professional service. It is hoped that students will approach each clinical rotation with a willingness and desire to learn new clinical skills.
All students are expected to be familiar with the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioner Scope and Standards of Practice for nurse practitioners, and to abide by them at all times.
Unless your preceptor asks you not to, you will be expected to wear a white lab coat with a UW nametag (see the MS section of the Handbook for more detail about professional expectations and dress code). You will obtain your nametags the first weekend of class for NURS 5006, the first clinical NP course.
For all students coming into the NP program either part-time or full-time, we ask that you attend the NP Program Orientation to be announced at a later date. It will be held in early September in conjunction with scheduled on-campus classes.
All NP students are assigned an advisor. You can access this information through WyoWeb.
