Getting Started - for Newly Admitted Graduate Students
|
Read through the following information to get started in your program of study:
Being a resident of a WICHE-participating state qualifies you to seek reduced tuition costs through WRGP. This program allows you to come to the University of Wyoming under resident tuition rates. You need to be officially accepted into our graduate nursing program before the WRGP benefit kicks in. You cannot utilize these benefits as a Non-Degree Seeking Graduate Student. If you are a resident of one of the following states, you can benefit from WRGP: Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, and Washington. Once you have been officially accepted into one of the MS Program options, let Debbie Shoefelt know that you qualify for WICHE's WRGP so that paperwork may be completed - email shoefelt@uwyo.edu.
Each semester, prior to advising, students are notified via e-mail that the upcoming semester's information has been added to the School of Nursing web site in the Advising/Registration link in the right side bar of the home page (as well as the linked "Advising/Registration Information" heading above).
Be sure to access the various class schedules available through the web to learn more about courses being offered, format offered (online/in class/compressed video), dates, times, etc. for the upcoming semester. Our Advising/Registration section mentioned above has links to all of the various class schedules: UW Class Schedule (on-campus courses); Outreach School's Class Schedule (distance education courses).
Admitted students are asked to register early for courses, but no later than 2 weeks prior to the start of the semester, especially for online courses. Registration access typically occurs around mid-semester for the next term. Information regarding registration procedures and dates can be found within the Advising/Registration link mentioned above.
You must first have your admission finalized through the Graduate School before you can register. You MUST check with your advisor prior to registering for any courses.
If you want to take classes prior to your formalized acceptance, you will need to submit the non-degree-seeking application on the Graduate School web site to be able to register. You can potentially take up to 12 credit hours prior to official acceptance and have those credits transferred to your program of study.
When taking courses in a semester prior to the semester of your official admittance to the master's/certificate program, it is extremely important that you are classified as a Non-Degree Seeking Graduate Student. If courses that are applicable to the master's program are completed with any type of undergraduate status, those will not be usable towards the graduate degree requirements. Classification (undergraduate versus graduate) is not determined by the level of the course taken but how you have applied and been admitted to UW.
Students that are finishing up requirements for the baccalaureate degree at UW and who are seeking to take graduate courses simultaneously must be sure to reserve those courses for graduate credit; otherwise, those will be applied to their undergraduate status and will not be usable towards the graduate degree requirements. Go to the Graduate School website (Forms and Publications) to access the 'Request to Reserve Coursework for Graduate Credit' petition. This petition must be completed prior to the semester in which the graduate course is to be taken.
If you have taken graduate level courses prior to your official admittance to the master's/certificate program and did not follow the above instructions and your courses are posted as undergraduate classification, please contact Debbie Shoefelt (shoefelt@uwyo.edu) at the Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing immediately to find out what your options may be for getting it corrected to reflect graduate classification.
Your admission letter from our school gave you your advisor name and contact information. Contact that advisor for all your advising needs, questions about program requirements, thesis/non-thesis options, etc. The MS Advising web page that you access through the Advising/Registration link also lists the advisors for the Nurse Educator and Nurse Practitioner options with links to their email addresses.
If you have not already done so, click on this underlined link which will take you to the "Admitted Students" page. There you will find:
