Nurse Educator Statement for Fall 2010 Applicants

Applicants for Fall 2010
Nurse Educator Option (master's and post-master's)

At the close of the spring semester 2009, the graduate faculty met and made significant revisions to the nurse educator option. With feedback from our students and communities of interest, changes were made to better prepare our graduates to be competent educators. Due to the lateness of these decisions, there was not time to have these changes approved through the university system. At the beginning of the fall semester, all changes made to the nurse educator option (and the post-MS nurse educator certificate) will be approved through the university and then posted to our website. However, please note the following as you consider applying to the nurse educator option:

  • All fall 2010 admitted students will be required to attend a fall orientation on campus in Laramie. The new graduate student orientation will be August 23-24, 2010 (the first 2 days of the 2010 fall semester).

  • All fall 2010 applicants must note in their application packet a specific area of clinical expertise upon which to build their program of study in nursing education. This expertise can be demonstrated with either national certification in an area or a portfolio of materials that support this expertise.

  • The nurse educator option will increase from 30-31 hours (depending on students' elective course) to 36 hours

  • The nursing education practicum (NURS 5390) will require 120 ‘practice' hours with a preceptor in your geographic area. Preceptors will vary as you and the course instructor find a ‘match' with your practicum objectives. A preceptor could be a hospital staff educator, community college educator or university educator.

Questions can be directed to Dr. Pamala Larsen, Faculty Coordinator of the Nurse Educator Option at PLarsen1@uwyo.edu.
