Symbolism of Nurses’ Pin

Each school has a distinctive pin with its own meaning.  Many schools have pins based on the official seal of their school.  That is true of the University of Wyoming, School of Nursing.  The basic design – the shape, metal, and color – is symbolic of its meaning.  The pin reflects the spirit of service to humanity.  The metal is yellow gold; the outer circle brown enamel.  These are the colors of the University of Wyoming.

The open book on the pin symbolizes knowledge and depicts the ideal of “Man’s right to knowledge and the free use thereof.”  The basic knowledge essential to the practice of professional nursing has been acquired by the graduates.

The quill across the open book symbolizes that “The pen is mightier than the sword.”  It implies that not only do you use knowledge in the practice of professional nursing, but that you have a definite responsibility to add to the body of nursing knowledge.  This means that professional nurses engage in research and continue to learn during their lifelong practice of nursing.

Equality reminds us that Wyoming has had equal suffrage and equal opportunity.

The word Nursing relates to the Code of Ethics for Professional Nurses.  The professional nurse respects the dignity and worth of every individual.  Nurses provide the caring health promotion, maintenance, and rehabilitation.

    • Spring Graduates:
Orders must be placed by February 22 to guarantee that it will be here for Convocation in May
.  If your order is not placed by February 1 and you decide later that you want a pin, you can check with the bookstore; sometimes they have extra pins in stock.

Late orders received after February 1 may incur additional expenses should the Bookstore no longer have any pins in stock and need to re-order (depending on timing of late order; the company may not be able to guarantee delivery prior to Convocation on May 10). Place orders by February 22 to avoid any delays and/or additional cost.

    • December Graduates:
If you would like to be able to receive your pin in December, the Bookstore must have your order no later than November 15th, as they have to special order these pins and do not tend to keep in stock. Otherwise, if you miss that deadline or decide later that you would like a pin, February 1 will be the deadline to get pins ordered for delivery at the May graduation.

  • Think about asking for the pin as a gift from your family.  Most families want to see their graduate receive a pin.

  • Your pins will be held by the School of Nursing until the School of Nursing Convocation at which time, they are presented to you.  If you do not attend Convocation, your pin will be mailed to you or you may pick it up from the School of Nursing the following week (please notify Claire Hitchcock as to a mailing address or if you are planning to pick up your pin after graduation).

  • You may still order a pin down the road after you have graduated.  You just need to contact the bookstore to order one.  After you have graduated, the bookstore will verify with the School of Nursing that you are a graduate of the school and are eligible to purchase a pin.
