Questions & Answers
about the
Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program

If you do not see your question(s) answered below, please email us at nurs.inq@uwyo.edu!  We will add your questions - and answers - to the list below to help others students. Thank you!

  1. How can I get more information about this program?

  2. Why should I come to the University of Wyoming's
Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing?

    • Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing - Let others praise us! - The UW School of Nursing has been tagged "The Best Little Nursing School in the West" by the CCNE accrediting team. One of our students wrote, "The charge nurse on my new PCU unit told me that 'UW must be doing something right, because they make great nurses.'" - UW School of Nursing Graduate, Megan Anderson

    • University of Wyoming - With the University of Wyoming's comfortable size and hands-on approach, our students have ample access to their professors. In clinical settings, the ratio of students to faculty is eight to one.

    • Laramie - UW's home - is nestled between two mountain ranges, bringing quick access to outdoor recreation or calming walks in the fresh mountain air.

    • Area - A dose of the big city is less than two-and-a-half hours away to metropolitan Denver, Colorado (and the always refreshing return to Laramie's light traffic and clean air!). Activities/amenities available in our area include skiing in the Snowies, hunting, snowmobiling, fishing, charity walks and runs, exceptional local hospital, no income tax, and the list goes on!!

  3. Is acceptance to the program based on a point system?  If so, what is that system?

    • The Nursing Grade Point Average (NGPA), calculated on the prerequisite nursing coursework plays a key role in the admission criteria. We require a minimum of 2.5 NGPA on the prerequisite courses, but in a competitive year, accepted students' GPAs may not fall below 3.0.

    • We also give some weight to the essay questions required on the application and to the School of Nursing Basic BSN Track Recommendation forms.

  4. Will applying this year help me to get in next year?

    • No, applying this year would not have any bearing on your acceptance next year. We re-rank students every year with the new application pools.

  5. Could I send my transcript to an advisor who could help me determine if my coursework transfers to UW, and who could also tell me what classes I would still need to take?

    • Please click this link to go to our Transcript Evaluation page. The process is explained and you are given two links from which to download the Transcript Evaluation Request Form in either WORD or PDF format or to submit it online. Instructions are given there as to where to mail the form [if you do not submit it online] as well as the transcripts. You will need to submit a $30 fee to initiate the evaluation.

  6. I will be a junior in high school this year. What classes do you recommend I take if I plan to pursue a nursing degree at UW?

    • You can enroll in college preparatory courses with an emphasis in the sciences, math and the humanities. Some schools provide nursing classes as well, which would be beneficial. If your school offers CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) classes, that would be very helpful, since our program does require that students be CNAs (or LPNs) upon application to our program. Also check into our "Getting Started" page and read the information for high school students.

  7. Do I have to achieve any minimum scores on the ACT or Math Placement Exam (MPE)?

    • Yes, in order to declare pre-nursing, students must have either a math placement score of 3 or an ACT math score of 23. These scores allow students to take College Algebra their first semester along with both Biology and Chemistry. Pre-nursing students need to be able to take those three courses that first semester in order to be on track for their subsequent science curriculum and to stay on track within the pre-nursing curriculum. Also check into our "Getting Started" page and read the information for high school students.
  8. Can I be licensed as a Registered Nurse if I have ever been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony?

    • If you have been convicted of a misdemeanor or a felony, you should contact the Wyoming State Board of Nursing (1-307-777-7601) or the state in which you plan to take the NCLEX [link here to go to web linking of all state boards of nursing] prior to accepting a position in the School of Nursing.  State boards of nursing control who is eligible to sit for the NCLEX after completing the requirements of an educational program.  If you cannot take the exam, you will not be licensed as a registered nurse.
