Getting Started!
BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) Program

For High School Students:

  1. You can prepare for a nursing career while still in high school!

    1. Enroll in college preparatory courses with an emphasis in the sciences, math, and the humanities.
    2. Declaring Pre-Nursing - Students who meet university requirements are admitted to the university. Graduates of fully accredited high schools may declare the pre-nursing component of the Basic BSN Track (declared NURS major) with a math placement score of 3 or an ACT math score of 23. Students seeking to transfer into the pre-nursing component must have a GPA of 2.5. Further acceptance into the pre-nursing component of the Basic BSN Track for students with previous college credit is also based on evaluation of their academic work with consideration of the School of Nursing Scholastic Requirements. For students who do not meet these requirements, it is suggested that they major in Health Sciences undeclared until they meet requirements.
    3. Enroll in a nursing class if your school provides one.
    4. We require our students to be CNAs (Certified Nurse Assistants), so find a CNA class to get a jump-start on admission requirements! Ask your guidance counselor in your high school about courses in your school or community. If you are in the Laramie or Cheyenne area, click here to find CNA course opportunities.
  2. Find out about University of Wyoming Admission Criteria

Go to the UW Admissions Criteria Web site for information regarding GPAs (grade-point averages) and pre-college curriculum requirements or call or e-mail them to request information. (E-mail; Phone: 1(800) DIAL-WYO.)

  3. UW Admission

  4. Advising

Call or e-mail Debbie Shoefelt (307) 766-4292 to plan classes / discuss career planning.

  5. Freshman Orientation

Ask UW Admissions about summer Freshman Orientation, during which you will be given a campus tour, counsel with an advisor, & enroll in fall classes.

  6. Can't Make Scheduled Freshman Orientations?...

...but would like to have a tour of the campus and meet with an advisor?  Make a date for a tour with the UW Visitor's Center by calling them at 307-766-4075.  They can also set up an advising appointment with the School of Nursing to fit your tour schedule.

  7. Down the Road...

The first two-three years at UW are spent working on prerequisite courses as a "pre-nursing" major. (Click here to go to the Course Sequence and Prerequisite Coursework page - there you can download the course sequence in WORD or PDF format. That page will list the prerequisite courses you need to take the first two-three years, and then shows the remaining courses that you will take if accepted into the program.) You apply for admission to the School of Nursing major component typically in the second semester (by February 1st) of your sophomore year; the actual major begins in the fall of your junior year. Admission is competitive - with GPA a major criteria, so keep those grades up!  We accept up to 48 students into the nursing major component each fall.
