Students need a strong math background to be eligible to take College Algebra in the fall of the freshman year along with Biology and Chemistry in order to stay in sequence for continuing science courses for the spring of the freshman year (Anatomy & Physiology).
Students with a lower math placement (remedial courses and/or problem solving) will have their progression through the nursing curriculum delayed a minimum of one year or until they have achieved eligibility to enroll in College Algebra and Chemistry.
For more information about math placement, please go to the UW Math Department Math Placement Web site.
The Pre-Nursing component of the program consists of 49-50 credits of prerequisite courses and 13-24 credits of required elective courses. The Nursing Major component consists of 60 credits. A minimum of 120 credits is required to earn the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.
All prerequisite courses need to be completed by the end of the spring semester prior to the fall in which seeking admission (typically the spring of your sophomore year) for priority consideration. Students must have a grade of C or better in all required courses and a minimum nursing grade point average (NGPA) of 2.5 calculated on all prerequisite courses; however, this does not guarantee progression to the nursing major component. If space is available, students completing prerequisites in the summer may be considered for admission.
If transferring credits, a transcript evaluation by the School of Nursing is required for determination of how your courses may transfer to UW and be applicable to the nursing curriculum. You must work with the Credentials Analyst in nursing (shoefelt@uwyo.edu), especially with regards to transfer work, as some course requirements could vary based on your individual academic background.
The course sequence linked at the top of this page reflects both nursing program and University Studies Program (USP 2003) requirements. Depending on your academic history, you may have slightly different requirements within the pre-nursing component of the program. To assess your individual degree expectations, you must work with the Credentials Analyst in nursing (shoefelt@uwyo.edu). Course requirements are subject to change. Therefore, it is important to keep in touch with our school.
